Frome Markets (Frome, England)

Frome MarketsFull of character and real life, the busy markets in Frome have been an integral part of Frome's local life for over 10,000 years. They provide a great place to find bargains in Frome or to just browse around the wide variety of stalls and enjoy the exciting atmosphere and local Frome market banter.

Frome's bustling markets range from the very large to a small, discreet collection of stalls, situated in quiet districts of Frome. They are held in many neighborhoods of Frome and provide a fun way to shop, for both experienced and novice bargain hunters alike.

It is worth noting that most market stands do not usually accept credit cards for purchases. Prices at Frome markets are not generally fixed and so friendly bartering is often a good idea, to try and reduce the price. Here are some of the main markets in the Frome area that are worth a visit.

Situated in the heart of Frome town centre, next to the Market Yard car park, the lively Cheese and Grain Market Hall was built in 1874 as Frome's 'New Market Hall'. This building was previously linked to the railway line and produce sold at the market was loaded directly onto the train and transported to other areas.

Today, the Cheese and Grain Market Hall has recently been restored and thoroughly renovated, and is now air-conditioned, with an on-site café / restaurant.

Regular markets at Frome's Cheese and Grain include the following, which are held most weeks between 09:00 to 13:00:

  • Flea Market - Monday
  • Arts and Crafts Market - Tuesday
  • Antiques and Collectors Markets - Wednesday
  • Women's Institute Market - some Thursdays, including a large amount of freshly picked flowers
  • Farmers' Markets - first and second Saturday every month, featuring around 30 market stalls with a large selection of local produce

Frome MarketsFrome Markets - Standerwick Market - Frome, England
The Market Yard was previously the site of Frome's popular cattle market, which was moved out of the town centre in 1990, as it was getting too large. Now sited in a purpose-built site in nearby Standerwick, just 5 km / 3 miles from central Frome, this important market is held every Wednesday. Regular mini-buses provide a shuttle service to the Standerwick market from Frome town centre.
